Patwon Ki Haveli History
A rich merchant Guman Chand Patwa built this beautiful structure back in the early 1800s. The family of Patwa was one of the richest and famous dealers who used to deal in gold and silver embroidery threads. For that reason they were popular as the Brocade Merchants and therefore the haveli also is popular as the Mansion of Brocade Merchants. However there were some rumors about the family too. People said that this family was involved in illegal dealings of opium. Guman Chand commissioned the construction of the haveli in 1805. With time he made more profit in trade and therefore he built five havelis inside the complex. In total it took more than 60 years to complete the construction of this haveli.

Patwon Ki Haveli Architecture
This structure is built in Rajputana style of architecture and is a 5 storey structure. Ancient traditional style of Jaisalmer architecture is evident from the construction of this mansion. Made of yellow sandstone the intricate carvings and detailing are the main point of attraction of this architecture. Each of the floors of the haveli are actually different havelis. The first haveli is the one at the ground floor and it is the largest one. You will find intricate work on the sandstone, carved pillars and gateways and arches here. The havelis look beautiful and are beautifully decorated too.
One of the most fascinating things here are the high ceilings and the pillars here. Also there are 60 jharokhas or balconies here with intricate carvings and ornate carved stones on it. Moreover the lattice work here is another major attraction here that brightens the palace in natural lighting and also helps in cross ventilation.

There is a museum inside the haveli that the Archeological Survey of India maintains. This is an in-house museum that will give you a nice insight about the culture and history of Jaisalmer. You will find many artifacts and belongings from the Patwa family here at display. Also the rich mirror work here will take you back to the bygone days. To explore the area well you can also hire a guide here by paying a fee of Rs. 200. That way you will get to know more about the palace and its history.
