How to reach

By air

If you are travelling by air then the nearest airport to reach Amer Fort is the Jaipur International airport. From the airport the location of the fort is about 21.2 km away. It would approximately take you around 50 minutes to reach the location of the fort from the Jaipur airport. You can easily opt for a car or take a cab as well to reach the location of the fort from the airport.

By train

In case you are travelling by train then the nearest railway station to reach the Amer Fort is the Jaipur Junction railway station. From the Jaipur railway station the location of Amer Fort is 11.4 km away. You can reach there in about 37 minutes from the railway station. The easiest option to reach the fort from the Jaipur railway station would be to take a cab or hire a car.

By road

History of Amber Fort

The construction of Amber Fort Jaipur began in 1558 with Raja Bharmal and Raja Man Singh I. But the fort could only be completed in the next two centuries and three kings put in their efforts to complete the structure. Finally in 1727 during the reign of Raja Sawai Jai Singh II the construction was completed. At that time it was the residence of the royal family leaving the older Jaigarh Fort. However both Jaigarh Fort and the Amer Fort are a single establishment because they have a common passageway. Earlier Amber Fort was popular as Dhundar and it was the capital of the Meena clan. Later the Kachhwaha rulers seized the fort from the clan and started the construction of Amer Fort in the 1600s.

Architecture of Amer Fort

The construction of this fort began long back during the time of Raja Man Singh I but majority of the structures here are built by the Meenas. The red and white sandstone of the construction reflects a perfect blend of Hindu and Mughal styles of architecture. One of the major attractions of the construction of Amer Fort Jaipur is the carvings of Hindu Gods and Goddesses on the walls. There are four main sections of this palace which are the four courtyards here.

First Courtyard

The first courtyard houses the Suraj Pol or the Sun Gate as this gate witnesses the first rays of the sun. From there the way leads to the Jaleb Chowk. On the right of the Jaleb Chowk there is the Sila Devi Temple. There is another temple here as well which is the Suhag Mandir.

Second Courtyard

From the stairway of the first courtyard you can reach the second courtyard. This section houses the Diwan e Aam and Diwan e Khas. There is a temple here as well which is the Jai Mandir.

Third Courtyard

The Ganesh Pol leads to the third courtyard. The famous Sheesh Mahal Amer Fort is located in this section of the fort. The Sheesh Mahal as the name suggests is made of concave mirrors. And because of that just a few candles could light up the entire palace. Other than this there is the Sukh Mahal here along with the palace of Raja Man Singh I.

Fourth Courtyard

The fourth courtyard has the Tripolia Gate and Zanana Dyodhi. This was the residence of the queens, their mothers as well as their attendants.
