Overview of Nathmal Ki Haveli Jaisalmer

The Nathmal Ki Haveli or the Golden Fort is a beautiful structure made majorly in yellow sandstone. This was a commissioned Haveli which was meant to be the residence of the then Prime Minister Mohata Nathmal. The construction of this architecture is unique as two brothers started working on the construction of this structure together. They were in charge of two different sides and while they were unable to measure the work, the haveli has similar structures but they are not exactly identical. That itself makes this construction even more unique. The haveli is popular as the Golden fort as the yellow sandstone of the construction reflects beautiful hues, especially during the sunrise and sunsets that makes it look like molten gold. However there had been use of 1.5 kg of gold in the construction of the haveli and the carvings on the wall.

Furthermore there are some carvings of objects like cars and fans on the pillar of this structure. What is most exciting about this is that the two architects carved these only on the basis of what they have heard from the people. On the basis of the explanation from the people they have carved the objects without actually seeing it themselves. All these factors about the construction and architecture of the Nathmal Ki Haveli Jaisalmer makes it a must visit spot in Rajasthan. Built in 1885 the Nathmal Ki Haveli is built by the brothers of the then Prime Minister of Mohata Nathmal, Lulu and Hathi. The name of this Haveli is also after the Prime Minister of Jaisalmer at that time Mohata Nathmal. According to beliefs both the brothers started building this haveli at the same time but they started doing it individually. They simply just divided the zone and demarcated their areas and started the construction. But they actually did not have any access to check on the symmetry of the construction that led to the construction of a very unique and asymmetrically unique building. You will find some parts of this Haveli to be identical but they are still not completely similar. The Maharawal of Jaisalmer was impressed by the two brother’s craftsmanship and therefore he commissioned the construction.

This haveli is one of the unique constructions in Jaisalmer and is one of the popular tourist spots too. The construction and architectural style is splendid.
